REVIEW: Muccarelli’s latest track, ‘CASH IN THE ATTIC’

Back in July I solo-dated my way to Jazz Café Festival to consume the best in fusions of rap, jazz, house, soul and ambient music. Sure, for a London-based festival, you’re most likely overspending on food and booze, but the lineup is what made the day out in Burgess Park rememberable.

From Ledbyher showcasing her underground sounds, Brighter Days Family performing a live set, to the entirety of Griselda (bar Conway the Machine) turning up – it’s all a fan of music would want! Okay sure, Westside Gunn was 30 minutes late to his own set but the New York rapper did what he does best and played all of his classics from the groups’ catalogue. Their groups sound alone is what the UK needs to delve in on, and Sheffield’s very own Muccarelli does this perfectly on his latest track, ‘CASH IN THE ATTIC’.

Muccarelli’s approach to boom bap beats and alternative sounds showcases confidence as well as a clear direction in creating tracks that exudes both grit and introspection. His latest single, ‘CASH IN THE ATTIC’, delves into the tension between ambition and consequence over a looped soul sample into an almost somber atmosphere. Like fellow conscious rappers (think Earl Sweatshirt or tracks from Babyfather), Muccarelli raps about

The full result: it’s the perfect soundtrack to start your Autumn. Lyrics spat over some reverb create an imagery for what future Madlib producers wish they could curate. He finishes the track with “You get what you put out” and, even though this is in reference to someone spewing up after clout chasing their way to fame, I hope the alternative happens with Muccarelli, and he makes it far, alongside his contemporaries like Kae Kuzi, Daniel Kashule, kid blu3, and SCaR. None of them should have to feel the sharp meditation on the cost of success.

“No filler, no hooks, no wasted seconds” is how Muccarelli describes himself, and that’s exactly what he’s proved on his newest single. When asked if there is anything else we should know about him he answered “I got plenty more”. So, if that means there’s more music on the way then count me in.

‘CASH IN THE ATTIC’ is out today. You can listen to it on Muccarelli’s Spotify here.
